Country music legend Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80. Her family announced on Tuesday that she died peacefully in Nashville after a battle with cancer.
Tributes poured in from fans, fellow musicians, and public figures as soon as the news broke. But alongside the outpouring of grief, something uglier happened.
Within an Hour, Her Wikipedia Page Was Vandalized
According to a report, Dolly Parton’s Wikipedia page was targeted by vandals within an hour of her death being announced. Social media users began sharing screenshots showing that her page had been altered with antisemitic content.
The changes included:
- Her profile photo being replaced with an image of a Nazi swastika.
- Her name being changed to “Jew lover.”
- Her page title being altered to reference Adam Lanza, the shooter responsible for the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.
- The Wikipedia page title being changed to “Dolly Parton – Adam Lanza was a hero.”
The edits did not stay up for long. Wikipedia’s revision history system allows past versions of a page to be restored quickly, and moderators reversed the changes.
The malicious edits did not go unnoticed. Online conversation around the incident picked up shortly after 2 PM on Tuesday. In total, more than 18,000 mentions of the incident appeared across the internet, and roughly 14,000 of those came from social media platforms. The tone of the conversation was overwhelmingly one of anger and disgust at the vandals.
One widely shared post on X read, “Someone temporarily vandalized Dolly Parton’s Wikipedia page. They swapped her photo for a Nazi swastika and changed the heading to ‘Jew lover.’ This is why I hate people. No words.”
